What is Melanotan II?

Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic peptide derived from alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. It interacts with melanocortin receptors.

Why was Melanotan II developed?

Early researchers were interested in developing potent analogues of alpha-MSH capable of affecting melanocortin signalling. A small Phase I study published in 1996 investigated Melanotan II in three male volunteers and observed increased pigmentation as well as several systemic effects.

What are melanocortin receptors?

The melanocortin receptor family comprises several G-protein-coupled receptors involved in processes including pigmentation, energy regulation and neurological signalling.

Evidence status

Mechanistic melanocortin activity is established. Human experimental research exists but is historically limited.
